Resurfacing

Stamped Overlay Services in Conroe & Montgomery County

Got an ugly concrete slab that’s still structurally solid? Tearing it out and starting over costs twice as much as resurfacing. Stamped overlays deliver the look of stone, slate, or brick without the demolition.

The Service

What Is a Stamped Overlay?

A stamped overlay is a thin layer of polymer-modified concrete or cementitious material applied over an existing concrete slab. Once applied, it’s stamped with the same patterns used in traditional stamped concrete — ashlar slate, flagstone, brick, cobblestone — and colored with integral pigment, color hardener, or antiquing release. The result looks like a freshly poured stamped slab, but it sits on top of your old one.

The existing slab is cleaned, profiled (grinder or acid wash), and primed with a bonding agent. The overlay material is mixed and applied in a uniform layer, then stamped while still workable. After curing, the surface is sealed with a clear protective coat — just like traditional stamped concrete.

Overlays typically cost $8–$14 per square foot compared to $15–$25 for a full tear-out and re-pour. The savings come from eliminating demolition, haul-off, and subgrade prep. For a 300 sq ft patio, an overlay can save $1,500–$3,000 compared to full replacement.

Our stamped overlay system transforms tired, outdated concrete into beautiful decorative surfaces without the cost and disruption of full demolition and replacement. Applied over structurally sound existing concrete, overlays deliver the same stunning patterns and textures as fresh stamped concrete. This cost-effective solution saves thousands compared to tear-out and re-pour, with results that last 15+ years.

Our Process

How We Handle Every Project

1

Slab Assessment

Honest evaluation: if your slab has major structural cracks, settling, or heaving, an overlay will fail. About one in five callers actually need tear-out. We tell you straight.

2

Profile & Prime

Grind or acid-etch the surface for a mechanical bond profile, apply bonding agent at proper coverage rates. Skip either step and the overlay delaminates.

3

Apply, Stamp, Seal

Polymer-modified overlay troweled to uniform thickness, stamped within a tight working window, colored and sealed. Results look identical to a fresh stamped pour.

The Difference

Why Choose Creative Concrete Designs for Stamped Overlays

Firefighter-owned and operated by Michael Goff. Discipline, accountability, and pride on every pour across Montgomery County.

Honest Slab Assessment

Not every slab qualifies for an overlay. About one in five callers actually need a tear-out and re-pour. We won’t sell overlays on bad slabs to make the sale — we’ll tell you what the right investment is.

Proper Surface Preparation

The overlay bonds through mechanical profile (grinding or acid etch) plus chemical bonding agent. Skip either step, and the overlay peels like a sticker. We grind every surface and never rush this step.

Material Knowledge

Polymer-modified overlay systems flex with substrate movement — important in clay country where seasonal slab movement is common. Cheaper, rigid overlay materials crack at the first hint of substrate shift.

Working Window Management

Overlay material sets faster than standard concrete, especially in Texas heat. We work in planned sections, keep material mixed in controlled batches, and have all stamps staged before mixing.

Common Questions

Overlays FAQ

Will an overlay stick to my old concrete?

Yes — when properly prepped. The existing slab is ground or etched to create a mechanical bond profile, then a liquid bonding agent is applied. The polymer-modified overlay material has adhesive properties standard concrete doesn’t have. The key is “properly prepped.”

How thick is a stamped overlay?

Stamped overlays are typically applied at 1/4” to 3/4” thickness. This is enough to accept stamp impressions and create realistic texture. The thin profile means minimal height change at transitions to doors, steps, and adjacent surfaces.

How long do stamped overlays last?

With proper maintenance (resealing every 2–3 years), stamped overlays last 15–20 years. That’s shorter than a full-depth stamped pour (25–30 years). Lifespan depends heavily on the condition of the base slab — if the base moves, the overlay moves with it.

Can you overlay a cracked slab?

Minor hairline cracks can be bridged by the overlay material. Structural cracks — anything wider than 1/8” or showing vertical displacement — will telegraph through the overlay and reappear on the surface. These need to be repaired at the base slab level first.

How much does a stamped overlay cost compared to full stamped concrete?

Overlays typically cost $8–$14 per square foot, compared to $12–$20 for a full tear-out and stamped re-pour. For a 300 sq ft patio, an overlay might save $1,500–$3,000 compared to full replacement.

Can I change the overlay color later?

The overlay surface can be re-stained or re-colored and resealed — similar to refreshing any stamped surface. You can’t change the stamp pattern without removing and re-applying the overlay, but a new overlay can be applied over the existing one if total thickness stays reasonable.
