Decorative Color
Concrete Staining Services in Conroe & Montgomery County
Plain gray concrete does the job, but it doesn’t have to look plain. Concrete staining adds permanent color — rich, translucent tones that become part of the slab itself.
The Service
What Is Concrete Staining?
Concrete staining is a coloring method that penetrates into the concrete surface rather than coating it. Unlike paint, stain doesn’t create a film that peels or flakes. Acid stains react chemically with the minerals in concrete, producing unique, mottled earth tones. Water-based stains deposit pigment into the surface pores, offering a wider color palette and more uniform coverage.
Application starts with surface preparation — cleaning, degreasing, and in some cases lightly profiling the surface for better absorption. Acid stain is applied and allowed to react for several hours (sometimes overnight), then neutralized and rinsed. Water-based stain is applied in coats, building color intensity. After staining, the surface is sealed to lock in the color and provide wear resistance.
Staining works on new pours and existing slabs across Montgomery County — interior floors, covered patios, porches, garage floors, and commercial showrooms. The color becomes part of the concrete and won’t peel, chip, or flake.
Give your existing concrete surfaces new life with professional staining from Creative Concrete Designs. We offer two distinct approaches: acid stains that react chemically with concrete to create unique, natural color variation with earthy tones, and dye stains that deliver bold, vibrant, modern colors with precise control. Both options are sealed for long-lasting beauty and protection.

Our Process
How We Handle Every Project
Surface Assessment & Test Patch
We apply stain test patches on your actual slab during the estimate so you see the real result — not a sample board from a different piece of concrete.
Prep & Stain
Clean, degrease, and profile the surface. Acid stain reacts chemically; water-based stain is applied in coats. Multi-color layering and saw-cut scoring are options.
Neutralize & Seal
Acid stain is neutralized and rinsed. A UV-stable sealer locks in the color — polyurethane for interior wear, acrylic for exterior UV resistance.
The Difference
Why Choose Creative Concrete Designs for Concrete Staining
Firefighter-owned and operated by Michael Goff. Discipline, accountability, and pride on every pour across Montgomery County.
Test Patches Before Commitment
Every piece of concrete reacts differently to acid stain based on age, mix design, and finish. A test patch on your slab shows you the real result before you commit to a color.
Surface Assessment
Not every slab is a good staining candidate. Previous sealers, coatings, curing compounds, and surface densifiers can block absorption. We evaluate condition and history before recommending.
Application Experience in Humidity
Reaction time and sealer application are both affected by humidity and temperature. We’ve applied stain in Montgomery County’s 80–90% humidity enough times to know when to adjust dilution and timing.
Honest Color Expectations
Acid stain doesn’t produce uniform, paint-like color. It creates variation — darker in some areas, lighter in others. We set realistic expectations upfront so you’re not surprised by the natural mottling.
Common Questions
Staining FAQ
What’s the difference between acid stain and water-based stain?
Acid stain uses a chemical reaction with the concrete to create color — translucent, variegated earth tones. Water-based stain deposits pigment into surface pores, offering a wider color range and more uniform coverage. Acid stain gives you unique character; water-based gives you consistency.
Can you stain old concrete?
Yes. Staining works on existing concrete of any age. The surface needs to be clean, free of previous coatings, and porous enough to absorb the stain. Concrete that’s been sealed, painted, or treated with a curing compound may need grinding or stripping first.
Does concrete stain fade?
The stain itself is permanent — it chemically bonds with or penetrates into the concrete. What fades is the sealer on top. Properly maintained stained concrete holds its color for 10–15 years or more.
Can I change the color of stained concrete?
You can go darker, but you can’t go lighter without grinding. A darker stain can be applied over existing stain. To lighten or completely change the color, the surface would need mechanical grinding to remove the stained layer, then re-staining.
Is stained concrete slippery?
The stain itself doesn’t change the texture. The sealer coat on top can be slick when wet. For exterior applications and anywhere near water, we add a non-slip additive. Interior floors with a matte sealer provide adequate traction for normal use.
How much does concrete staining cost?
Staining typically runs $4–$10 per square foot depending on stain type, number of colors, pattern complexity, and surface prep needed. A basic single-color acid stain on a clean slab is on the lower end. Multi-color layered applications with scoring run higher.
