Pool Decks & Cool Surfaces

Spray Deck Coating Services in Conroe & Montgomery County

Bare concrete pool decks in Texas get dangerously hot — 150 degrees or more in direct July sun. Spray deck is an acrylic coating that creates a textured, slip-resistant surface that stays significantly cooler underfoot.

The Service

What Is Spray Deck?

Spray deck — also called cool deck or knockdown texture — is a thin acrylic polymer coating applied over existing or new concrete using a hopper gun. The material is sprayed on in a splatter pattern, then partially knocked down with a trowel to flatten the high points. The result is a lightly textured surface that’s cooler to walk on, slip-resistant, and available in multiple colors. It’s the go-to pool deck coating in Southeast Texas.

Application starts with surface preparation — pressure washing and, if needed, grinding or repairing the existing concrete. A primer or bonding coat is applied, followed by the spray deck material in a uniform pattern. The knockdown step flattens the texture to the desired profile — heavier for more grip, lighter for a smoother feel.

Spray deck surfaces can be up to 30% cooler than bare or sealed concrete in direct sun. The acrylic coating reflects more solar radiation than raw concrete, and the textured surface increases air circulation. In practical terms, a bare concrete pool deck at 150 degrees in July might measure 105–110 with a spray deck coating — still warm, but walkable barefoot.

Our spray deck coating system is the ideal solution for pool decks, patios, and outdoor areas in the Texas heat. The specialized acrylic coating stays significantly cooler than standard concrete, making it comfortable to walk on barefoot even when surface temperatures exceed 140°F. The textured finish provides excellent slip resistance around pools and wet areas. Available in multiple colors and patterns.

Our Process

How We Handle Every Project

1

Surface Prep

Repair cracks, fill divots, grind high spots. Spray deck is thin — it doesn’t hide significant surface defects. Prep work takes longer than the spraying itself.

2

Primer & Spray

Primer or bonding coat first, then uniform spray pattern applied with a hopper gun. Consistent gun distance, pressure, and overlap produce a uniform texture across the full area.

3

Knockdown & Cure

Partial knockdown with a trowel to flatten peaks to the desired profile. Standard, heavy, or skip-trowel texture depending on the feel you want. Optional sealer for added stain resistance.

The Difference

Why Choose Creative Concrete Designs for Spray Deck

Firefighter-owned and operated by Michael Goff. Discipline, accountability, and pride on every pour across Montgomery County.

Surface Prep Beyond Pressure Washing

We repair cracks, fill divots, and grind high spots before applying spray deck. The coating is thin — it doesn’t hide significant surface defects. Laying spray deck over unrepaired concrete means every crack telegraphs through.

Consistent Texture Application

The spray pattern and knockdown technique determine texture uniformity. Inconsistent spraying creates thick and thin spots. We maintain consistent gun distance, pressure, and overlap across the full area.

Color Matching & Integration

When spray deck is applied to multiple surfaces — pool deck, walkway, patio extension — color consistency matters. We mix material in bulk batches to ensure color uniformity across the entire project.

Timing Around Pool Schedules

A pool deck project means the pool is out of commission for 2–3 days. We schedule to minimize downtime — working with you to find windows that don’t conflict with pool season peak or family events.

Common Questions

Spray Deck FAQ

How much cooler is spray deck than bare concrete?

Spray deck surfaces can be up to 30% cooler than bare or sealed concrete in direct sun. A bare concrete pool deck at 150 degrees in July might measure 105–110 with a spray deck coating. Still warm, but walkable in bare feet.

How long does spray deck last?

A quality spray deck application lasts 7–10 years before needing a recoat. Lifespan depends on sun exposure, traffic volume, chemical exposure (pool chemicals), and maintenance. Sections around pool ladders may need spot touch-ups before the full deck needs recoating.

Can spray deck be applied over existing coatings?

It depends on the condition. If the current surface is well-bonded and in reasonable shape, a new coat can go over it after cleaning and priming. If the existing coating is peeling or heavily deteriorated, it needs to be removed first. We assess at the estimate.

Does spray deck change the drainage on my pool deck?

Spray deck adds a very thin layer — typically 1/8” or less — so it doesn’t significantly change grade or drainage. However, if your pool deck currently has ponding or drainage issues, the coating won’t fix them. Drainage problems need to be addressed at the slab level first.

What colors are available for spray deck?

Standard colors include tan, sandstone, desert beige, gray, off-white, and terra cotta. Lighter colors stay cooler — an important consideration for pool decks in full sun. Custom color mixing is available. We recommend lighter tones for uncovered pool areas.

Can I apply spray deck myself?

The materials are available to consumers, but achieving a consistent, professional texture requires practice with the hopper gun and knockdown technique. Uneven texture, lap marks, and inconsistent color are common DIY results. For a surface you’ll walk on barefoot every day, professional application is worth it.
